It was originally thought to be merely a matter of taste. The 288 is a little lower than the other samples because it wasn't long ago that it was discovered that 5.Nf6 was truly that much stronger than 5.Nc6. Note that all of these are based on large, valid sample sizes (a valid sample is defined as 30 or more in statistics).
